ORDER 614 is a Salvation Army based program based in Melbourne CBD and is about restoring dignity through practical means to the homeless and oppressed. The program was formed by Majors Brendan and Sandra Nottle.
It is to my understanding they formed Order 614 because they observed the modern day church’s hypocrisy and shunning of the marginalised and those who needed God’s love the most – including drug addicts, prostitutes, alcoholics and the mentally handicapped.
In an alleyway around the corner from the fancy upper Collins Street – stores that sell Prada, Louis Vuitton, Rolex and even expensive truffles – was the 614 drop-in centre. Now I believe the centre is upgraded to become the Hamodava Cafe.
Order 614 was named from the bible verse Isaiah 61:4: They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devasted. They will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.
Other programs 614 are involved in include the AMP 614 Youth Bus, youth nights, a support space for international students, and church sessions. There were other programs I was involved in – such as the Salvos night food van – but it has been years since I have visited Melbourne and programs are often added to the list.
